Today’s Journey

Things I Love about Driving East out of Portland

There are six things that I love about driving east out of Portland on Interstate Highway 84.

The River Views

Interstate Highway 84 crosses several small rivers and streams, but primarily I am referring to the views of the massive Columbia River for over 100 miles of driving.

The Rain

I don’t love the rain; rather, I love the fact that the farther east I travel, the less rain there is. It rains a lot in Portland and I look forward to getting out of it.

You can See for Miles

It doesn’t take many miles of driving east before you can start to see farther and farther up river. By the time you get past The Dalles, you can literaly see for 20-30 miles ahead.

The Geology

Long before recorded history, the Columbia River cut it’s way through the Cascade Mountains along this route. You can see the effects of that as you drive through The Gorge area.

The Dams

There are several hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River and some of them, such as John Day Dam, can be seen on this drive.

These are impressive works that supply electrical power to the region.

The View from Deadman Pass

We won’t be able to see the view today because it’ll be dark by the time we climb up to Deadman Pass just a few miles southeast of Pendleton.

This is a still image captured during a different day when we were heading west:

I like the inset video technique, and labeling the locations along the way is very helpful. I like to know where I’m going, what I’m seeing, and where I’ve been.
