When I first started out on the road in my first truck I found the stock bunk mattress very uncomfortable.
I had trouble sleeping all night and would wake up feeling like someone had hit me in the hip with a ball peen hammer!
Some drivers add cushy blankets on top of the mattress or (a very expensive) custom mattress available at some of the larger truck stops.
Several people suggested getting a memory foam mattress topper and I found this to be an inexpensive and effective alternative.
These start at about $25 at Walmart.
The first one I bought, shown at right, measured 34 inches wide by 6 feet long and is 1-1/2 inches thick.
I noticed an improvement in my comfort and restful sleep the very first night after I put on my bunk!
The only issue I have had is that it was a little too narrow for my bunk.
After about a year I could tell it was time to get another one so I bought the next size up and just trimmed the width to fit the bunk better.
In fact, I kept the original topper and put the new one on top. I can hardly feel that pea under my mattress now!
If you’re an over-the-road truck driver, I highly recommend you get one of these mattress toppers.
